Friday 5 August 2011: Burnside Bridge, Portland
A lovely day walking along the public walkways by the Willamette River in downtown Portland. A slight difference of opinion on the distance (3 to 5 miles), strolling up river to cross the Steel Bridge just as an Amtrak train pulled in to the train station, and then being on hand to watch them raise the bridge for a barge that was going out. Continuing on the trail by fountains and lawns, with a side trip to Voodoo Doughnuts (bacon maple bars, vegan devil's food, Miami vice berry, and various bright unnaturally-colored things covered with crunchy breakfast cereal). Back across the Hawthorne Bridge, looking up and down the river at the other ten bridges: crisscrossing steel and curved highways and cars against the skyline of tall mirrored buildings. It's a wonderful friendly exciting place and we are exhausted and happy travelers.
