Nidoto Nai Yoni--Let it not Happen Again

I went over to Bainbridge Island to see the memorial dedicated to those Japanese Islanders who were the first groups to be forcibly exiled into internment 'camps" after the attack at Pearl Harbor. It is formally called the Bainbridge Island WWII Nikkei Internment and Exclusion Memorial. These Bainbridge Island Japanese made up ten percent of the population on the Island at the time. On March 30, 1942, the US government forcibly sent over two hundred Bainbridge Japanese residents from their Island homes to live in exile in Manzanar--an internment camp in California.

While this shameful period in our history should NOT be allowed to ever happen again...it seems we are dangerously close to allowing this all over again. As one former interned Bainbridge resident Frank Kitamoto says " What is happening to the Muslims is very similar to what happened to us. That will continue until we decide not to let fear dictate our response to events."
