Carmelita and Rose

This is Carmelita and Rose. They're neighbors. But they didn't know each other until today. Rose is Rose Beal, a Holocaust survivor. As a teenager in the late 1930s she was one of 200 of 17,000 Jews to survive a grueling deportation to Poland just before the outbreak of the war. In 1938, Rose was caught up in
Krystallnacht or "Night of Broken Glass." Her mother, and younger brothers narrowly escaped death several times. She was able to make it to the U.S. with her brother. None of the rest of her family survived.

Carmelita is Carmelita Pope, Broadway actress in the 1940s and occasionally on television and movie screen. On Broadway she played the role of Stella in A Streetcar Named Desire, opposite Marlon Brando.

Carmelita was also in the first live action Spider-Man, in 1977, in the role of Mrs. Elkins.

This was after a presentation Rose gave at the Warhawk Air Museum. It was attended by about 750 middle school and high school students from the area.
