The Conductor

Unlike Europe, American trains are not public transport, they are tourist attractions. As tourist attractions they tend to be staffed by volunteers, largely older people.

Once there were 5 railroads converging in Corning, NY. Now there is on line that brings goods into town for one of the factories. The people who own this train are trying to bring back a passenger service, but for now it is just dinner cruises and ice cream socials.

America is in love with the automobile, the one time cheap and flexible means of transport. Rail has all but gone into ruin and vanished - tracks have been torn up and converted to walking or biking trails. It is a shame really because taking a train is a great way to start a vacation.
