The Balfour Battery - Hoxa

We spent the afternoon clambering around these amazing gun positions from the First and Seconds World Wars the guarding The Grand Fleet in Scapa Flow.

These 'directors towers', where they controlled the guns had the look of a nineteen thirties science fiction film - all art deco drama. Although entirely utilitarian they still managed to capture the style of the period they were build in.

Form following function I suppose.

Parts of the Island are full of this type of stuff which are kept like any other piece of historical architecture. In it's own way as importat as a medieval castle or Iron Age settlement.

We loved it and well worth a visit.
