Past Lives

A bit of a morning for connecting with previous lives. But before you think I've gone all reincarnation I simply mean previous phases of my own life, which sometimes seem to belong to a different lifetime. Anyway, the morning started with the Edinburgh photo press pack outside the EICC. Today the Scottish Low Carbon Investment Conference kicks off and the Royal Bank of Scotland's sponsorship of the event prompted Friends of the Earth Scotland to do something to highlight RBS's continued investment in companies involved in decidedly High Carbon activities, including oil and gas exploration, new coal plants and mining tar sands. The protest involved a 'girl band' of activists singing a version of 'Price Tag' (Jessie J?) with suitably altered lyrics. Don't know if the copyright police will prevent it staying on YouTube, if it ever gets there but they were recording it so it might appear on the web. There might be pictures in the press tomorrow, although given the crowd of photogs, I doubt any of mine will make it. Anyway, rather than being one of the delegates heading up the escalators in the conference centre to an RBS event, I was outside with the protesters.
And then on my way home I went past the old S&N Fountain brewery site, almost completely flattened now. Strange to imagine all the activity that once took place on the site, from the staff social club (the Tartan Club) where we played football at lunchtimes, the brewing halls and then the canning lines, the kegging plant and the rest of the production infrastructure. Working in IT, at one time or another I wrote or amended programs that dealt with most of the things that took place there.
All gone now.
