Mandible

Thanks for all the comments on yesterday's multiple Westie blip. Polly and Basil were numbers 2 and 3, respectively (I'm sorry to say, mikeder that it is my style to buy pink(ish) dog collars...).

Well, today was Bones Day and no prizes for guessing that this specimen is a mandible. Note the mental foramina, that is the two holes inferior to the second premolars, through which the mental nerve and blood vessels pass. If you look closely (or look at the close-up here) you can see plaque on the teeth that has mineralised over time. I guess they didn't have fluoride toothpaste 800-1000 years ago...
