Fourteenth Day in America....

Once when I was sitting like this, pondering contentedly to no great, nor even small, purpose, one of the other sitters opened his eyes and stared at me as if in some state of surprise at still being in this world.

I said, mainly to give him time to adjust himself to the confusion of survival, "We'll maybe be going to Texas in the morning."

He said. "Why go to Texas? There is nothing there. Texas is so flat, if you stand on your toes and look all the way out, you can see right to the back of your own head."

But he was from Texas, and was talking to himself, his eyes loosing focus like someone still in love. Sometimes what you run from as fast as you can is what you then spend your whole life missing.

Doesn't mean you didn't have to run though.
