Wednesday 26 October 2011: Corner fires

There must be some a festival of some kind here in China at the moment. On many street corners, people are burning 'money' for their deceased relatives to spend in the afterlife.

Traditionally, a circle is made of bai jiu (white spirits) and the paper money is placed inside the circle and burned. It is best for the paper to be burned at an intersection because the deceased relative is more likely to pass an intersection.

I have always thought it is a very special tradition and a wonderful way to honour the dead.
