Dudley Canal Tunnel and Limestone Workings Trip...

We have been on the narrow boat trip of the two tunnels and limestone workings of the Dudley Canal Trust, this is a non profit making heritage site.

We went through two tunnels one 2668M long and one 2888M long, it was fascinating and a long day. We were out for 7 hours all in all, and some of us had a go at "Legging" the narrow boat through one of the tunnels.

As you can see we are 300M into the tunnel at this point. only another 2588M to go until we come out in sunlight again.

These were built by hand in 1775 by the Navies that worked for the Earl of Dudley, Lord Ward. So he could mine and remove the Lime stone that was abundant in the area and was used in his iron and steel works.

The No 1 tunnel was opened and took one day off the time to take the boats to London. But when the Netherton Tunnel was opened it soon became obsolete.
