Sunday 6 November 2011: If You Go Down In The Woods Today

We made it the RSPB's flagship reserve today at Minsmere.

I bet you don't know that the RSPB owe most of it's recent history to Hitler!

Minsmere was created when the Luftwaffe bombed to North Suffolk sea defences and crested a large wetland flooded area. As the war was on no one could repair the sea breech and nature does what nature likes to do, and reclaimed the land.

Britain's first breeding pair of avocets set up home there, and the RSPB purchased the land to protect them. They also adopted the birds as their logo from that point.

We saw a few avocets there today. Also notables, spotted redshank, ruff, lapwings, a beautiful hornet, a year tick in the shape of bearded tits, heron, little egrets, loads of finches and tits, dunlin, two marsh harriers, cormorants, shelduck to just name a few.

We spent the day with Bev of Bevosity blip fame again. We wouldn't have seen the bearded tits without her help!

My back hasn't been too bad. I just took it easy. Shame the weather couldn't have been a bit brighter. If it's a bit sunnier tomorrow, we might head back there.

All in all, not a bad day really!
