Sgwarnog: In the Field

Fire and Ice

We were promised a festival of fire and ice for the switch on of the Bradford Christmas Lights, and that's what we got. Through the day a series of ice sculptures had been created and displayed through the city, and then the finale, a half hour piece of firework enhanced theatre in front of City Hall, followed by the big switch on. I'm sure I'll bring you some of the Christmas lights in days to come, but for today the fireworks win out.

It's occasions like these that show there are times when people are happy to come into the city, and fill the square. It's a shame the City Park still wasn't finished, so there is still the issue that half the square is a construction compound, but at least the new fountains were on show, and when it is finished I think this really will be an impressive civic space, particularly on occasions like this.

This is the second attempt at the firework setting on my camera, and the presence of the clock exposes the risks of a hand-held two second exposure, but it's still a pretty image, if rather gaudy.

And after all this, we returned home to some great family news, worthy of further celebration.
