Wednesday 23 November 2011: Squares

Today's the day ....................... to make a patchwork quilt

There is a wonderful Friendship Counterpane on display at work - and this is one of the squares in it. It was made between 1899 and 1909 by 34 different women who embroidered on squares 6ins x 6ins - something which was important to them.

You can just about make out that this square was embroidered by one Ethel Williams. The embroidered squares are interspersed with knitted squares which, although they all follow the same pattern, were again made by different people.

The quilt was masterminded by one woman whose name was Marianne Barrett. All the participants were known to her and were members of her family, neighbours or friends.

It must have been a real labour of love ...........................
