Monday 21 November 2011: Shelagh Take A Bow

11.15 p.m. A Room In A House Somewhere In Brockley, South East London.

If Monday wasn't bad enough a day, the news of the death of the playwright Shelagh Delaney certainly capped it off. Delaney was at the forefront of of the emergence of a new generation of playwrights in the late 50s and her debut play A Taste Of Honey which was filmed just three years later lead to the breakthrough for the actress Rita Tushingham who alongside co-star Murray Melvin I was lucky enough to see and hear discuss the film at the BFI. There admiration and affection for Delaney and her work shone through. And the next time you watch the film, make sure to look out for that tall lady watching the netball match in the opening scene. You'll be pleasantly surprised to see who it is.

This short film on Shelagh Delaney's Salford may be of help.
