Of Course They Can Fly

At times it's really difficult deciding what to offer as the blip.

Today started with a fabulous early morning close encounter with a pod of six orca. On the south side of Sea Lion Island is a little lagoon almost completely cut off from the sea. It's a very popular spot for southern elephant seals since it does give them protection from the prowling orca that frequent the island at this time of year.

However, the orca have learnt about the seals and how to get into the lagoon. The BBC showed footage of this a few years ago - and this morning I saw the orcas visiting the lagoon looking for seal pups, who were keeping well out of the water.

Later in the day I spent ages on the beaches watching the gentoos returning to their colonies. As the gentoos come back in to the beach they 'porpoise' to get up through the surf as quickly as possible. And if you get the photo timing just right, you really might think that they can fly.
