Saturday 19 November 2011: This Rings A Bell
Our first evening dander in New York on our holiday, and we retraced familiar ground from Times Square down 7th Avenue to 34th Street, through Macy's to Herald Square and back up Broadway.
This clock, known as the James Gordon Monument, used to stand on top of the New York Herald building on the square, which has long since ceased to exist. The statue is Minerva, and the illusion is given that these two boyos ring the bell to chime the hour. There is actually a mallet at the back of the bell which does the ringing.
Herald Square is where the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade ends.
