Doggy stile

The village of Trefdraeth/Newport straggles from harbour to hillside with countless little winding paths, lanes and alleys snaking between the levels. A variety of stone stiles, some with a short flight of steps on either side, permits access. Casey has perfected his own technique for negotiating these, involving an effective if not very graceful balancing act.

Behind him can be seen the bay. The waves were breaking white on the rocks and bursts of sunshine illuminated sea and the shore in a blaze of light. I could have blipped a dozen images: the wigeon on the surf that suddenly hurled themselves into the air as we approached, the golden sunshine on the salt marshes, the textures of the harbour wall and the whitewashed cottages shuttered for the duration. This hectic summer holiday village is a peaceful place in its winter repose, until Christmas comes of course.
