Tuesday 6 December 2011: A Neighborhood Down The Toilet

See the friendly-looking meeting place of the Spruce Hill Community Association? See the people sitting inside? You'd think they were deciding something of concern to the community, or something like that. About ten minutes before the meeting began, I learned that it was to be held.

A Subway sandwich shop has already signed a lease around the corner from my doorstep. The franchise has been "bigger than McDonald's" since 2008 and operate over 29,000 shops in over 100 countries. There was a soldier serving in Afghanistan, and while he was away Subway siezed his two franchizes and sold them off to company insiders.

This will be the first such store in the Baltimore Avenue Corridor. All the existing businesses are locally owned and operated. The reason people love this neighborhood is that exactly. This is what makes the place unique, even if I can't afford to patronize some of the newer places.

This makes my skin crawl. More later as the thing develops.
