The Edge of the Wold

Whitbarrow

The limestone hill of Whitbarrow seen from the Sandside promenade. The morning mists were vanishing rapidly. There's the finest dusting of snow on top of the hill.

This profile shows the steep scarp slope on the left and the gradual scarp on the right. The angle of the scarp follows the dip of the beds of limestone that were deposited in tropical seas 350 million years ago. The beds have been lifted and tilted by tectonic forces in the distant past, and the limestones now form a discontinuous ring around the Lake District.

This is as early a blip as I ever do. I nipped into Kendal first thing to pick up some things from the office. Later this morning we are heading over to Yorkshire for the evening, so it was blip now or backblip tomorrow.
