Tourism returns to Luxor...

Since the revolution in January, tourists have been few and far between in Luxor. This is extremely sad, as the only industry the city has is tourism.

However, over the last few months, the daily 'convoys' of coaches from the Red Sea resort of Hurghada are bringing more and more people to Luxor. In the main, they are Russians holidaying in Hurghada, and the day trip to Luxor is very popular with them. About 30 coaches arrive in Luxor each day - one half going to see the sights in Luxor, and the other half visiting the West Bank monuments. After lunch, they change itineraries - those who have visited the East go to the West Bank and vice versa.

This group of visitors were visiting the Colossi of Memnon - the one free attraction on the West Bank. They guard the entrance to the mortuary temple of Amenhotep III, the largest temple on the West Bank, which is being excavated at the moment.

It is so gratifying to see tourist numbers increasing daily, as the local economy depends on them - so please spread the message that Luxor is a safe destination for visitors, and that they will be welcomed by the local people.

Whether you take a Nile Cruise, or stay for a week or more in one of Luxor's 5 star hotels, you will be made to feel most welcome, and you will return home with unforgettable memories.
