Mamao/Papaya II

Still life on a sunny day in Rio.

We found a number of turn of last-century cafes today in the centre of Rio, all very redolent of the city's coffee-sipping past. It's a somewhat glaring contrast to the Brazil government statistics published yesterday that over 1 milllion people have been shot dead in the country during the last 30 years. That's a sixth of the number who perished in the WWII Holocaust, and more than the combined tallies of dead from the recent nine year war in Iraq, the 50 year Palestinain/Israel conflict and the statistically insignificant Irish Troubles and ETA conflict in Spain.

The goverment have also announced that World Cup entrance tickets will be half price to any local who first hands in a firearm.

PS
One papaya and four packets of M&Ms were consumed in the taking of this photo - my kind of shot!
