Thursday 8 December 2011: Antikythera Mechanism

Today I went with Nick to an astronomy talk by Prof. Mike Edmund about the Antikythera Mechanism.

It was a brilliant talk and left me pretty damn amazed about how the Ancient Greeks were able to create this piece of technology (then how that skill was lost for thousands of years!)

Definitely worth reading up on if you get the chance it really is amazing.

"This device is just extraordinary, the only thing of its kind. The design is beautiful, the astronomy is exactly .right. The way the mechanics are designed just makes your jaw drop. Whoever has done this has done it extremely carefully ... in terms of historic and scarcity value, I have to regard this mechanism as being more valuable than the Mona Lisa" Professor Edmunds
