Wednesday 21 December 2011: Cardiff Winter Wonderland
We've had the most wonderful Christmassy evening in Cardiff.
I am pretty sure that due to the huge amounts of snow and ice last year we never made it to Winter Wonderland, so it was good to get back down there and soak in some atmosphere.
Quite a few cities do these Winter Wonderland now. The Cardiff one is always impressive, with a large ice rink and small fairground, as well as plenty of food stalls and small bars where you can buy hot mulled wine. We didn't have a mulled wine this year, but we did have an amazing hot chocolate made from real molten chocolate and Baileys liqueur. A proper Christmas drink.
This year there have the BT Infinity ride there, which was a bit of hairy scary for me. Usually they have one of the biggest Ferris Wheels in Europe there, not sure who booked it first this year, but it was a bit of a shame, as I quite like going up in that, as the view over the city is breathtaking.
So the star attraction for me is the Carousel. This one is usually found in Cardiff Bay over the summer, and is an incredible work of art, let alone a brilliant fairground ride. It clearly is a labour of love, and the attention to the paintwork on the horses is incredible. I could look at it for hours. Whoever owns it, is clearly very proud of it, and so they should be!
All in all, a fantastic evening, as I am so glad we made the effort to go down.
