Wednesday 28 December 2011: The foraging party

The sequel to yesterday's big oyster mushroom discovery was a family fungus foray to collect another huge haul from the dead tree. Here are my sons busy picking/snapping while Casey wishes everyone would get a move on and continue the walk.

Later on, the foraging party raided the supermarket for essential ingredients and, after what seemed liked several hours' activity in the kitchen, there emerged a delicious tureen of Chinese mushroom soup, flavoured with lime, tamarind, coriander and goodness knows what else, plus noodles and duck dumplings as additions to what was already more solid than liquid: a feast of fine flavours!

What I especially like about this shot is that behind the branches on the left hand edge is the barely visible profile of the boys' old secondary school. I don't think either of them would regard their alma mater ('nourishing mother') as providing much in the way of intellectual sustenance and both have moved away to pursue their studies in higher seats of learning - which is as it should be. It's wonderful when they come home, however briefly, to nourish the family in their turn, and with so much more than just food on the table.
