Tuesday 3 January 2012: John Peterkin, Baker of Portsoy

Lovely story, this.

Yesterday a dear friend told me on Facebook that her mother's family came from Portsoy. Her grandfather was one of 13 children of the baker of Portsoy, John Peterkin, all of whom - boys and girls - went to university, all over the world. Well, that's the family legend anyway. I'm sure this must be the right John Peterkin and family, as the dates fit, and here you have 10 children, some of whom obviously didn't get a chance to go to university.

It took us about 30 mins of assiduous searching of the graveyard to find this, and eventually we found it, just as we were giving up, right on the main drag. Well, he had every reason to be proud, Mr Peterkin, and to flaunt it a bit.

As my friend has never had a chance to come to Portsoy, it was great to be able to take this photo for her. Now this is what "social" media is all about, as far as I'm concerned.

On another note, we seem to have been protected thus far from the worst of the weather. Feeling for friends further south. We took our morning walk in interesting light, with sun over the hill at a low angle, and rainbows over the sea. It's started rain now, but none of the wind that is affecting other parts of Scotland. I feel privileged.
