Back to work (or not)

Arrived at work to see that all the lights were off - our power was out. It had been a wild night with high winds and lots of rain. We waited in the cold and dark for some news from the electricity people. At around 10.30, still in coats and with no prospect of a cup of coffee, people began to drift home. The disadvantage of a paperless office is that it is fuelled by electricity.

I got a quick tutorial on how to turn on the servers if the power came back on and then went home. After about an hour, I got a text to say that the power was back on (and the kettle!). On my way back, I came across four downed trees (two blocking most of the road) and a few more looking distinctly dodgy. The servers had started themselves up again but we still had no email, internet or shared computer drives. We tried to edit on paper and keep busy until the IT guy came back and restarted everything (couldn't get it to work remotely).

Finally reconnected at about 3 pm after a frustrating day. There were only 6 of us left in the office - so a quiet afternoon.

This is the remnants of a large tree very close to work that completely blocked the road when I returned. By the time I'd managed to find chance to get down there to photograph it, the council men had chopped it up and cleared it - amazing efficiency!
