Thursday 12 January 2012: The Meeting Place

Nine metres tall and 20 tonnes in weight this is no shrinking violet of a sculpture. In St Pancras Station on the first level where the eurostar leaves from it's hard not to spot . When first unveiled it copped a lot of criticism in reference to poor public art and described by one notable as "a very good example of the crap out there".

I love it. It's powerful, how can one not be at 9m!!, almost timeless in a way and heroic in that way of youth, strength and renewal. Though the couple are in 'modern' dress, from a distance I thought it might have been a returned serviceman being greeted at the station. With the perspective thing going on too, dare I say it has that Rodin feel of proportion...the scale of hands and feet and foreshortening that shouldn't be right but are.
