My Northumberland Life

The Chimney Mill

Another day, another appointment with the dental consultant. At least it gave me the opportunity to blip the windmill in which he's based and to find out a bit about it.

I used to drive past this all the time and wonder what was inside... It was built in 1782 by civil engineer John Smeaton and was the first 5-sailed smock mill in Britain (according to the info on the wall I was reading whilst waiting for my appointment). After that it was the clubhouse for Newcastle Golf Club, an architects, a corvette dealership and in the 1990s the Clothes Show was occasionally broadcast from here. In 2006 it became a specialist dental practice.

I love knowing the history of buildings and imagining who and what was there before...
