Tuesday 24 January 2012: Teetotal Row
If you rhymed "Row" with "Cow", I reckon this would make a pretty good (ironic) name for a heavy metal band. As it is, it's the name of an unobtrusive little alleyway (on the left of the picture) that reflects Street's Quaker / Temperance influence, particularly in the 19th Century. Apparently, the name appears in documents around the 1840s, when a Temperance Society (and Hall) was established in the village. I believe the name disappeared for some time but was resurrected at the start of this century thanks to a local resident who , I think, lives in Teetotal House in Teetotal Row.
Postponed our planned round of golf today as it has been p...p... persistently raining for most of the day. This was taken in a brief dry spell.
