A Very Nice Walk

The fog came in before lunch and the waves shone like melted silver before they crashed into the cliffs. The sea caves made breathing sounds like large animals, whales maybe, or seals. Later I thought of a draft horse with its sweet warm exhale. We are looking across the cove to the blowhole, an old piece of natural entertainment now fitted with a concrete cover with three circular holes that force tall spires of water straight up into the air. When I first saw this forty years ago, I think it was just a hole between the rocks. Guys would take girls there to watch their skirts billow up, a la Marilyn Monroe.
