Sunday 29 January 2012: Across the bar - Kaituna River
A fishing boat makes its way safely across the bar at high tide at the mouth of the Kaituna River - this is where the river yesterday's kayaker was on reaches the sea. In a high sea, or at low tide (or both) the bar can be treacherous.
Lots of fishers gather here, mainly local Maori people to fish from both boats and from the shore.
The hill in the distance is Mount Maunganui, a lovely beach area, with surf on one side and calm on the other.
