Monday 30 January 2012: Cloudy morning Papamoa Beach

Early morning, cloud cover, on Papamoa Beach near Mount Maunganui Tauranga.

No sign of the disaster that happened on the beach when the oil and flotsam from the wrecked ship Rena washed up, but it's still out there, and hidden in the sand there is still oil, in a brown layer about 5-10cm down

The island on the skyline is Motiti, badly affected as only a small number of people live out there, and have used the sea for food until this happened.

But the locals are back using their beach and hopefully this sort of disaster will never happen again.
