Tuesday 31 January 2012: Baking Bread

On the way to the souk this morning, I found myself following a delightful smell in the vilage of Qorna. The smell of fresh bread being baked is so d-lish!

This team of bakers were so lively and energetic and had a factory line going that worked brilliantly!. The dough was mixed in an old bath - yes a bath! Shaped and then placed onto the trays to have a sprinkling of flour.

A few minutes later they were hurled around by a man who, I am sure, thought he was creating a pizza base and then tossed on to a conveyor belt to be cooked!

The guy out on the street patiently waits for the Baladi (Country) bread to come through, puffed up and golden brown, it takes only 2 mins to go through the oven.

This bread is subsidised by the Government. 20 of these individual baladi breads will cost 1le or approximately 10p, hence you will always find a chaotic gathering at the front of the oven!
