Wednesday 8 February 2012: Travis.

Travis is the owner of the Hurunui Hotel I popped in to say Hi this afternoon ( for a lemon lime and bitter's )and he graciously let me take his photo ( he had no choice )

The Hurunui Hotel was first built next to the Hurunui Riverby John Hastie in 1860 using limestone blocks.
The Hurunui Hotel operates under one of the oldest licences granted in Canterbury. It was a resting spot for travellers on the main route between Canterbury, Nelson and the Westcoast.
A busy area for all sheep entering Canterbury and it was a time when scab( a mite on sheep ) was a problem. The sheep had to be dipped before coming into Canterbury. John was obliged to provide assistance at the river ford as well as accommodation, refreshments and stabling.
There was a flood in 1868 when the river burst its banks and flowed 'a mile wide'. Although the hotel suffered no damage it was moved, block by block, to its present site in 1869 and rebuilt by Johns widow.( By then poor John had died of epilepsy.)

So if you are passing the Hurunui Hotel pop in and say hi to Travis tell him Kaye sent you :-)
