What tales you have to tell
Ancient tree!
How you have audienced
As the sky danced her sunrise
And russled applause
As she encored her sunset
Watched lesser trees braisen against the elements
And lose
Sheltered zealous saplings and watched them grow
Lifted children into your branches
Shaded lovers with your canopy
And cradled lonesome pensives, thoughfilled,
In the gnarled crevices of your trunk
Watched the landscapes crop cycles
Evolve from green and brown
To concrete and glass
And your lungfuls of air grow thick with exhaust
Tiring your filtering leaves and blackening your bark
What tales you have to tell
Ancient tree!
Perhaps you'll whisper your annuals,
Ring the wisdom of your years
If I watch a while with you here
And listen
