Sunday 19 February 2012: Margay
This is a margay (Leopardus wiedii, a species of large cat found in Costa Rica. They are nocturnal hunters and are only slightly larger than an average sized house cat. We saw this one, along with a jaguarundi, a two toed sloth, a toucan and more, at a wildlife refuge in Playa Carillo called La Selva. It's a tiny little place, just someone's backyard really, but it's run by an Italian zoologist and his Spanish partner out of their own pockets, relying solely on donations and money from tours to keep running. The animals were all in quite small cages, but they're pretty much doing the best they can there with the funds they have I think. Quite a nice place all the same, and good to see.
