Sgwarnog: In the Field

The Leaving of Liverpool

Although I grew up under the cultural hegemony of Liverpool I've only ever paid fleeting visits, be it for football, or work.

Today was one of those flying work visits, but before my meeting I dashed down to Pier Head in search of emblematic blip material.  It was a dull, grey day, and the fabulous buildings and monuments weren't showing at their best, although the Liver Building is impressive in any conditions.

While I was there, the Mersey ferry MV Royal Iris pulled in, and as it left to return to Wallasey a black-headed gull decided to join me in seeing it off.

My Great Great Uncle, who featured in my childhood mainly as the name on a plaque on the Institute that he built for our home village, ran a shipping line from Liverpool.  I didn't have time to track down any of that family heritage on this visit, although I did walk down Water Street, where his first offices were located.
