Thursday 23 February 2012: Water hyacinth

I suspect this lovely plant to be Eichhornia crassipes, a dreaded floating aquatic plant.

Its native habitat is the Amazon basin where its growth is kept in check by natural predators.

In our country it has caused devastation in large/small dams.
For many years it has been declared an undesired invader; and to this day it could never be totally eradicated.

I hope that the owner of this potted version knows the ropes with this plant.
