Thursday 23 February 2012: Ewe Flag

This is a curious and interesting artefact, I found in the BA Terminal 5 Lounge.

It's part of the BA Art Collection and is labelled:

Ewe Tribe
Ewe Flag
Ghana 1998

This was created over 40 years after Ghanian independence, yet clearly shows a Union Jack, a white man, a black man and a leopard.

My guess is that it is a Ghanian art work interpreting the history of colonialism in this part of West Africa.

I was particular excited to see this flag since my dissertation at university was on the History of Cocoa Farming in Southern British Togoland - which is the areas of Ghana east of the Volta River occupied by the Ewe.
