Sunday 26 February 2012: Urban decay

I grew up in Canberra, Australia. It's a designed city that covers a huge area. The whole place is made up of suburb after suburb of boring brick & tile houses. The oldest parts of town have pretty much been bulldozed to make way for new apartments. I never felt very connected or welcome in this created environment.
Now I live in Dunedin which has a much more haphazard feel to it. I really like the old buildings & the lack of maintenance on some of the houses. It gives it a human, imperfect feel to it. The passage of time shows on the exterior of the buildings. It puts our lives into perspective, we are just the current human beings who need to make the most of here & now as tomorrow it might all be different. K
