Sunday 26 February 2012: The Western Baths (early 19th Century)
I move back to the glorious architecture of Glasgow following the 'beach view' yesterday. This a picture of The Western Baths which is one of the few Victorian bathhouses still in use in the UK. A history of the baths can be found here:

I joined the Arlington Baths which is a second of the functioning bath houses in Glasgow's woodlands area. Slightly more down to earth clientelle word has it. (Although I was told to "f*** off back to Essex" by one man who was annoyed that I swam in his lane!). Apparently there were a few ruffled feathers when the older clientelle, who had long subscribed to what they viewed as an 'exclusive' club, saw special offers bringing in the riff-raff like me :-) A real shame that this ruins an otherwise wonderfully relaxing and beautiful setting to go for a swim and such snootery ultimately threatens the survival of places like this as it depends on membership. The Govan baths on the southside has just been re-opened and hopefully in a few years it will be available to use again. I'm thinking the southsiders will be more down to earth :-))
