Sunday 4 March 2012: One Horse to Rule them All
This had to be the blip for today, no question about it! To understand the significance of this blip, one must first understand that both of my daughters are complete Lord of the Rings (LOTR) movie trilogy buffs. Immy has been quite surprised and disappointed to discover that the majority of kids here a) know next to nothing about the LOTR films, and b) don't care about them! Given that these films were released between 2001-2003, when Immy and her peers were aged just three to five years old, this is perhaps not surprising! I think it's fair to say that Christina has probably guided Immy's interest in the films quite considerably.
Today Immy was booked in for her riding lesson at 12.00, but at 10am I received a phone call asking if she would like to join the other girls on a ride down to the river at 11am. She was very excited by this prospect and so we set off in good spirits. Thankfully, the weather today was so much nicer than it has been over the past few days - brilliant blue skies, though out of the sun it was still chilly and the wind was bracing!
The ride down to the Wairoa River turned out to be great fun and Immy managed her mount Sparky very well, despite the fact that this was only her third lesson and he was quite determined to do very little his own thing most of the time! He was very funny in the river though, 'pawing' and splashing the water. I took many photographs down at the river before they decided to ride back and do some free riding/training in the arena. It was towards the end of the lesson that someone casually mentioned that one of the horses in the group, the big grey, Percy, had been in LOTR. Not only that, but he had in fact been 'Arod', the horse belonging to Legolas, aka Orlando Bloom! Immy's face was a picture!
"Do you like Orlando Bloom?" someone asked her. "Well, Percy was his horse. When you get home, look up 'Arod and Legolas' on Youtube and you will find them together. Percy looks just the same except now he's a bit older so he has gone a bit greyer. You can have a ride on him next week if you like!"
I think Immy could hardly believe it! So here she is with Percy, or is it Arod? He seemed like a very laid-back horse but I'm told that if you get him out on a hillside he still thinks "I'm in a movie now!" and likes to gallop like the wind.
