Glen Nevis

A day of glorious sunshine with just an odd short shower.

Drove to Glen Nevis, one of the most beautiful of all the Highland glens, and a great example of a glaciated valley. Easy to see roches moutonnees [remembered from a school trip to the Lake District aged 13 when I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast nowadays!], literally 'rock sheep', smooth rounded ice age shapes scraped by ice moving past resulting in distinctive markings. The river Nevis flows through the glen, sometimes down amazing cascades and through deep rock chasms and pools. Something for every blip-eye.

Braveheart was filmed in this glen [you can park in the Braveheart car park], the home of the Camerons. There are differences of opinion as to the origins of the meaning of the name. One of the most popular explanations is that it comes from the Gaelic meaning 'crooked nose', being a reference to Donald Dubh, the first recorded clan chieftain around 1400, and certainly Camerons have been in Glen Nevis since the 1500's. They are still in business in the area today.

Moving up or down the glen, vistas open up all the while. This is the rugged top of a mountain unknown to me on the south side. Spodzone will mostly likely be able to tell me, please. It was spectacular as the sun started its descent late in the afternoon.
