Saturday 23 August 2008: No Fuss Ten More in Moray
Was shooting an endurance Mountain Bike race today in Moray - as many laps of a 10 mile course as the competitors could manage in 10 hours. Some did in pairs, some in teams, and some solo... insane.
I learned a lot today - mostly that getting good mountain bike shots in the woods is hard work. The combination of speed and low-light means that autofocus struggles - so then you have to pre-focus and be very accurate when you fire. You nearly always need a bit of flash - but getting the balance of that right so it doesn't look like midnight and can be done consistently for each competitor is tricky. I was pleased that the ambient light balanced with off-camera flash worked (the shot on the left here) - but it was hard to get consistently right.
