We Will Remember You, Part 1

Last week I read a local news story about one of the elm trees on campus. The very sad news was that one of the stately elms near Old Main has become infected with a disease called elm yellows, and it will have to be removed to prevent the spread of the disease to other trees.

The two elm trees that currently serve as bookends to Old Main were planted in 1933. They have provided shade and beauty and a nesting place for birds for all of these years.

With my heart heavy at the thought of the passing of one of these beautiful old trees, I took my camera along to a morning meeting on campus, and made time to visit the tree both before and after my meeting.

If you look closely, you can see that someone has left a bouquet of yellow flowers by the tree's trunk. Beautiful, beloved tree, thank you. We will remember you.
