Wednesday 7 March 2012: Which way?
The Haltwhistle long walkers went on a 9 mile walk centred on Scotch Coulthard today. It's wild country up there and the weather was wild today. We had sun, wind, rain and hail at different times. Sometimes the sky ahead was black with the rain sheeting down, but behind us the sky was blue.
D, our leader, has a reputation for leading boggy walks over difficult terrain. A number of people took fright when they heard the words Scotch Coulthard, so only 11 of us turned up. The walk had most of the elements of D's walks: bog, rough moorland, longer than originally planned, a deviation from the route towards the end....... but it was a terrific walk and I enjoyed it a lot.
We found loads of frog spawn. The mosses and lichens were gorgeous. We saw a lamb - far too early for this sort of country.
Here there is a little discussion about the route.......
