Thursday 8 March 2012: Mural, Novi Sad
Today we are occupying Novi Sad's cafes whilst engaging in a massive project planning session. We're also wandering around (what we now call a 'working walk') this interesting (still slightly but formerly very) multicultural city. An interesting fact we discovered from colleagues at the University of Novi Sad whom we met for dinner last night was this city and Osijek had approximately the same population (ca 165-170k) according to the 1991 census, whereas in the 2011 census the figures were 221k for Novi Sad and 81k for Osijek. Such are effects of war and resettlement.
Anyone who comes here whether for Exit or for business should try the restaurants Zak and Fish and Zelenis. Top notch.
And the photo? Well it says 'The only truth'. Not entirely sure how to interpret it but it could have some interesting suggestive meanings in a post communist transition society, where traces of the highly authoritarian period in the 1990s are not far below the surface. Or maybe the artist was just having an existential crisis at the time when s/he painted it.
