Clach an Trushal

The standing stone in Ballantrushal, Isle of Lewis. I Think, at 19 feet - (5.8m) it is one of the tallest monolithic standing stones in Scotland (daughter of 5'6" for scale). Local legend has it that a battle was being fought between the MacAulays and the Morrisons at Callanish (possibly a future blip?) and the gods, looking down, were angry with the warriors, so they turned them into stone (e.g. the standing stones!) Some warriors noticed this and took off in different directions to escape - and this giant reached as far as Ballantrushal before being lithified - possibly about 20 miles or so This was another one of the illustrations painted by William Daniell when he toured the coast of the UK.

A lovely story anyway!
