Silence

Today was the Fiendsdale fell race which takes place on the Bowland fells, I offered to marshal, much easier than running the race!

Before the start the race organiser asked for a minute of silence in memory of Bill Smith a legendary fell runner who died on the Bowland fells last September. Here is a link to a local paper which carried the story of his death.

This is a fairly low key race, the nature of the ground in Bowland can't cope with big numbers of runners. There were 76 starters, they had to cover 6.5 miles with about 2200ft of climbing, the winner (number 49 in the middle of the picture) got round in about an hour. Interestingly he rode his bike to the race and rode home afterwards!

Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team were in attendance and provided most of the marshals which was amazing as the team had been out until late last night on a search for a missing person in the Silverdale area. In return for their help Bowland Fell runners who organise the race donate all the profits to the Mountain Rescue team.
