Sunday 18 March 2012: 'One of a Kind'
Went into the city today mainly to buy a pair of slippers ....and got caught up with the thrones of people walking into the square to see the Cathedral and low and behold another ICON of Christchurch. How many cities can lay claim to their own Wizard. The Wizard is a most colourful character who has been on the steps of the Cathedral on his soap box pontificating on babies, women and religion for years in our Christchurch. He has an amazing wit and is always able to withstand the jekylls and goading of the crowd. Here he was today rallying the people with his petition to save the Cathedral. He may not be 131 years old, however, he is a marvel and a wizard of our time. Brackenbury Channell has donned his Wizard hat for over 38 years and we love him. In the early days he did not believe that Wizards should have to complete the census and would hire a boat and sail out of New Zealand waters in order to avoid the 'authorities'...what a riot he is.
